We dedicate today’s post to sharing with you the comforting recipe for the quintessential French sandwich, known as Croque Madame.
A Croque Madame is basically a ham sandwich with cheese and a fried egg on top. We strongly recommend the original recipe with bechamel sauce and artisan bread.
For the bechamel sauce, boil half an onion and in a pint of milk. Separately, dissolve 1 tablespoon of butter and when it is liquid, add 2 tablespoons of flour. Stir until blended, then add the milk (use a strainer to keep out the onion) and stir consistently until everything has a thick consistency.
Toast the bread and when it’s ready, spread with bechamel and fill your sandwich with ham and cheese. Gruyère cheese is usually used but any one that melts will work. You can put cheese on top if you’re going to put everything in the oven, which was just what we did.
While the cheese cooks, fry the egg that will go over your sandwich… That’s the only tricky part!
Delicious, don’t you think?
