Grunge is now fashionable among people of a generation born after the death of Kurt Cobain. One of our favorite examples is Tavi Gevinson, who was born two years and a few days after that April 5, 1994.
As the generation that lived through grunge at its best is nostalgic (perhaps for their youth), adolescents around the world idealize that time. And no wonder because, after all, grunge was full of style.
We could make a list of items taken from grunge fashion: torn sweaters, tiaras and crowns for the day, floral mini dresses purchased in thrift stores, old converse shoes.
Some of these items are now in the usual vocabulary of fashion, some others are used in slightly different ways but the same in essence. Even the world’s catwalks are filled with grunge: designs created by a generation in their forties, for girls who have just reached their twenties.
