Attendees at the spring music festivals here in Beijing were a colorful lot.
China’s leading independant record label, Modern Sky, sponsored the Strawberry Festival, which brought together some of the leading indie, punk and other rock and roll bands. Acupuncture Records was behind Intro, Beijing’s main electronic music festival.
At Strawberry 95% of the bands and spectators were local and very hipsterish. The DJs at the electronic music festival were mainly foreign and the spectators were about half and half.
In many ways, the focus at both events was more on the fashion than the music, about which the spectators often did not always know a huge amount.
That said, many fans dressed in the same styles as their favorite bands, the most famous of which were Tang Dynasty, Hedgehog, the Carsick Cars, Queen Sea Big Shark, and Muma & Third Party, to name a few.
Cartoon figures like Superman were out as well as people dressed like Elvis Presley and Lady Gaga.
Strawberry was a combination of rock festival, circus, and fashion runway. The one thing that was missing from both Strawberry and Intro were drugs, though there was a bit of alcohol.
