Boys in skirts

by United Blogs of Benetton on: Febrero 10th, 2010

The first woman ever to set the corset aside; the one who first wore trousers on the street; the first female who dared to cut her hair like a man or to wear a miniskirt, provoking a public scandal.

The history of female apparel is full of landmarks. Maybe that’s why our wardrobe is so diverse and there is a powerful industry focussed on it with the intention of satisfying all its demands: skirts, trousers, dresses, jackets, waistcoats; dotted, checked or striped, red, pink, with shoulder pads, transparencies…

Whereas men continue to be stuck with the same costume of centuries past. But something is changing. Isn’t it?

Marc Jacobs, one of the most powerful designers of the present scene, has been demanding the male skirt for a long time and never fails to wear it in his public appearances. It seems as if his call for the liberation from the “tyranny of trousers” has started to bear fruit, since some have already begun to follow in his footsteps. Are they enlightened, vulgar or visionary?

Are we soon going to see young men strolling down the street in a skirt as if it were the most natural thing in the world, or is this trend not going anywhere? And what, then: handbags and high heels for them?

The funny thing is that wearing skirts is not really alien to males. Since antiquity with Greek-Roman tunics, up to the classic kilt of Scottish clans, men have always worn skirts. Shall boys of the future reclaim this garment? What do you think: Would you wear it?
