Funny Faces

by United Blogs of Benetton on: June 1st, 2010

Finally I have got round to editing this video footage I did at the It’s My Time campaign shoot in New York back in April. It seems like such a long time ago but as soon as I started editing the video, those personalities of the winners came flooding back.

I actually had this song in mind as soon as I got to the shoot and saw their vivacity and enthusiasm pouring out. The song is from the 1957 film Funny Face starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn and at one point during the track you have to imagine Astaire’s shimmying tap dancing moves. It also helped that I got everyone to pull a ‘funny face’ of their own but obviously the meaning of the song transcends that of just having a purely ‘funny’ face and of course, the message is that there are no finite definitions to the word ‘funny’ – especially when applied to a face…

Ok, so it’s a bit of a cop out to be patriotic and start searching through the profiles submitted from the UK. That said, 5000+ pages worth of profiles is a lot to sift through so I thought I’d narrow it down a little and pick out my personal best from this ickle island of ours…

Jessamine has already taken it into her own hands at creating a Benetton advert quite endearing. I love the natural qualities that shine through her photos. Apparently, she can “act, dance, write, paint…” and she wears Benetton jumpers. Yipeeeee!

Ida clearly has a love of the dramatics looking at her photos. It’s quite strange yet amazing that she manages to convey a different persona in every picture.

You can’t beat a good smile and Andrea has a pretty infectious one. There’s a modern Louise Brooks vibe going on too which I love.

joshua karl

I’ll commend Joshua Karl if he has indeed styled himself as there’s this striking contrast between the debonair and playfulness in his attire.

emma low

Emma Low had me with her panda bear costume and the cute cropped hairstyle that I myself could never pull off.

Here’s my list of favourites. What do you think?

Yanot is 24 and from Russia.
She was in my round up a few weeks ago and has such an arresting look that she was the first person that came to mind when compiling my top five.
She looks so cool but sweet at the same time; a difficult combination to merge and yet somehow she does it so effortlessly. I feel like she probably doesn’t even know how cool she is. I’d love to photograph her for sure.

Iouanna is 15 and also from Russia.
There is nothing in her ‘about me’ section but really don’t the pictures just say it all? She has such an intrinsically beautiful style; very gentle and ethereal. Love all these shots too. The pictures she has chosen to represent her style speak volumes. Everything just seems so soft and peaceful – I can almost hear a Norah Jones soundtrack in the background…

She reminds me of Georgina Jagger with those red lips and Lou Doillon in the others; what more can I say! Again, I love the photos she has chosen to represent her style. It’s all so French and chic.

How can you not love her! I don’t think I’ve ever come across someone so groomed – it may not be to everyones taste but you’ve got to hand it to the girl, she looks immaculate.
No roots, not a hair out of place, beautiful clear skin, precise make-up etc. She looks fun.

There aren’t many photos on her profile and the ones that are there are all quirky crops and sneaky peeks; it all leaves me very intrigued. I like the fact that she is only allowing us to see parts of her, a little glimpse here and a little look there. You can see that she is beautiful and then there is that giant tattoo – POW! I mean look at it. I’d love to know what it is.
